A sump pump that will not start, runs nonstop, or hums without moving water can fail at the worst moment. At Herndon McFarland Plumbing, we have repaired sump pumps across DFW since 1995. We treat a failing unit as a time-sensitive call.

We focus on fixing existing units: failures, nonstop running, and silent faults caught before a storm arrives.
When a pump is dead, we work from the circuit inward: power, the GFCI device, the float, the capacitor, and the motor. You get the true cause of failure and the right repair or replacement.
A pump that never shuts off or cycles on and off usually has a stuck float, a failed check valve, or an incorrectly set pit level. We fix the cause so the motor does not wear out prematurely.
Float switches foul, catch on the pit wall, or wear out, which is a common cause of sump pumps misbehaving. We test the switch under load and replace it with the correct type for your basin.
A failed check valve allows water to backflow into the pit, cycling the motor. A clogged discharge line stops flow entirely. We fix both, so your system drains properly and stays dry.
A pump that hums, trips the breaker, or runs without pumping often has a seized impeller, a worn capacitor, or a failing motor. We diagnose, repair, or advise on replacement.
Before heavy weather, we run a full test cycle, clear the pit, confirm the float and check valve, verify the circuit, and check any backup. This visit prevents a small fault from becoming a flooded floor.
Many dead pump calls are not dead pumps. The motor is fine but has no power because a ground fault device cut it off. Texas has adopted the 2023 National Electrical Code statewide, which requires sump pumps to have Class A GFCI protection.
A Class A GFCI trips at roughly 4 to 6 milliamps of current leaking to ground, protecting people. The trouble is that a submersible pump sits in a damp pit. As its motor ages, moisture intrusion and insulation wear raise the leakage current, which the system detects as a safety hazard.
When leakage drifts into the trip range, the GFCI cuts power. In a wet pit during a storm, the trip can happen quietly weeks before anyone notices. The homeowner then finds a pump that looks perfect but will not start while the basin fills.
This is why we do not assume the pump is the problem. We measure leakage current, inspect the dedicated circuit and GFCI device, test the float and motor under load, and recommend fixes that maintain protection. These include a quality GFCI breaker at the panel, plus a high-water alarm or a backup pump, rather than disabling the safety device.
Some referrals carry weight. L Good came to us during major home repairs on a structural engineer’s recommendation and then trusted us again for a smaller job.
“We were referred to Herndon McFarland Plumbing when we had some major home repairs. I was told by a structural engineer that they were the best in the business. I couldn’t agree more with that statement… They were kind, understanding, and patient as I asked more than my fair share of questions.”
The same standard applies whether the job is a large project or a single sump pump repair, including patient answers. Read their full Google review.
The strongest signal a plumber earns is a customer who keeps coming back. Robert Ingle used us twice and was already planning the next call.
“I’ve had two interactions with this plumbing company and both were great. I am planning on using them for future needs.”
Repeat trust is built one reliable visit at a time. That is what we aim for on every sump pump repair. Read Robert’s full Google review.
Herndon McFarland Plumbing opened in DFW in 1995. The same family-run shop now has 26 employees, 10 trucks, and over 100 combined years on the team. We show up quickly and fix it the first time.
When a pump quits, fast action keeps water off your floor. We diagnose the fault, provide a written estimate, and get the unit running. If it is past saving, we guide you through sump pump installation.

If water is showing up where it should not, add leak detection and repair while we are on site.
Watch for a pump that will not start, one that runs constantly or cycles on and off rapidly, loud grinding, visible rust or oil in the pit, or a musty smell from standing water. Any of these means the system is not protecting you, so schedule a repair before the next storm.
We start at the power source, since a tripped breaker or GFCI is a frequent culprit. Then test the float, the capacitor, and the motor under load. Working from the circuit inward shows whether the unit needs a part, a switch, or replacement, and we explain what we find first.
Usually, yes. A pump that never shuts off is most often fighting a stuck float, a failed check valve, or a switch set at the wrong level. Our sump pump repair service corrects the cause so the motor does not run itself to failure.
If the unit is under seven years old and the fault is a switch, capacitor, or check valve, repair is the better value. If it is older or has failed more than once, replacement usually costs less over time, and we can move you to sump pump installation when that is the smarter call.
Often, the pump is healthy, and a Class A GFCI trips due to leakage current that builds as a submersible motor ages in a damp pit. The NEC requires that protection, so the fix is to verify the circuit, use a reliable GFCI breaker, and add a high-water alarm or backup so a trip never goes unnoticed.

From slab leaks under the foundation to sewer line repipes, every job is diagnosed, documented, and done right. A look at recent work across North Dallas.
Excellent customer service, very friendly staff from the person taking the call to the staff fixing the repairs. Very trustworthy company. Shaun explained the step-by-step process and provided very fair prices.
Their positive, upbeat, anxious-to-please attitude made the whole process the very best it could be! All of the employees were a pleasure to work with. I highly recommend Herndon McFarland.
Trent and Reggie were the most professional associates entering our home. They treated our home with respect as if it were theirs. We will use this company again because of them and our experience.
